Interesting that it’s believed the default state is helplessness but control can be learned

I’ve definitely read into this a lot. My parents are like this. One of them called me early one morning, note that I live about 2 hours away minimum.

I came outside and my tire is flat! I have work in 10 minutes and I just don’t know what to do!

Okay, what do you need from me?

Well I don’t know I guess, I just have to get to work!

So, why don’t you call someone or something?

    Who do I call?

I don’t know, a friend, coworker, taxi? Could get an Uber? It’s only about a mile you could walk couldn’t you?

I don’t know, who would take me?

ffs. That’s where I just gave up. Learned helplessness is a thing. This is the person who raised me and can’t problem solve an inconvenience. The car was parked at their place btw, it wasn’t on the side of the road, and they live in an apartment complex where they have friends. It’s just astonishing to watch someone grow more and more dependent on others for basic problem solving.
