My local university had their own Palestine encampment, but after less than 24 hours it was already broken up by the cops in the middle of the night with excessive cop violence. I’m so fucking mad

In a messed up way I find it funny that there is a very real possibility that the US will invade The Netherlands if Netanyahu gets to The Hague. All this talk about Russia being a threat only to get invaded by the US.

Went to the university encampment yesterday, and holy shit it gives me so much hope. It was so well organized and everything was so well communicated. Makes me think a revolution is not so farfetched here as I though.

I am especially pleased with the requirements of proper PPE I am seeing. As long as we don’t let this get co-opted by wreckers or liberals who will try to push the anti-mask thing, I’m sure- I think there’s a genuine momentum here. So much organizing in the west has been neglectful of this, seeing it be actually enforced and adhered to is wonderful.

For several days now I have been making instagram comments in various left wing related pages that have gotten thousands of likes in total now. I managed to get lots of following requests and now I am contemplating becoming a left wing Instagram influencer.

We have arrived at the stage of the year in which it is either too cold for a t shirt or too hot for a sweater, combined with lethal humidity (rain), causing a constant state of discomfort and sweat.

There was another demonstration today. We walked from the campus, where there was a ton of riot police already, to Spui square. There we were met by police violence. Riot police with their armored cars and police dogs. But we managed to deescalate by sitting down. I feel like we are getting calmer in front of a police presence. After a while we dispersed away from where the police was standing, but some people stayed on the square.

Yes, I consider hexbear sort of the sister instance to grad, so I’m also over there frequently. It started with this thread and then later spilled over into another one.

I feel very bad for dirt_owl, the OP of both threads, and all the other women/gnc users posting their thoughts.

Maybe. One thing I know is that even “left” men are still men. The bar is underground for me. At least Lemmygrad doesn’t have its origins in a community surrounding an edgy podcast (yes, sorry, I’m a hater). I lurked in the old r/cth days and I can’t say I’m surprised at all.

I finally broke down today about Palestine. I was angry already, especially since october 7th. But after what happened yesterday and after watching a video about october 7th and the fake crimes Israel accused Palestine of, I finally cried. Specifically after pictures were shown in the video of Palestinians who have been killed. I can’t stop crying.

What is wrong with football fans? It seems that lately the vast majority tend to be immensely reactionary and racist. Isn’t this supposed to be the peoples sport?

I think that at least in Europe it reflects a part of society that is becoming increasingly right wing. Football used to be a people’s sport but as time went on it became a household thing mostly attached to patriarchal views. Football is ‘supposed to be for men’ after all. It is no surprise that men, in turn, tend to hold on to this bastion of manliness. And with everything in society, you have these layers to this issue.

Your average football fan may be open to change, however slow it may be. I personally have seen the demographic in my team’s stadium evolve over time. More women and POC are now finding their way to the matches, for example. Not everyone is bothered by the captain wearing a rainbow band, or with a gay supporting group being founded.

However, there are also highly reactionary fans and they are often the loudest fans in the ultras section. These same ultras sections are often filled with outcast type of people and often right wing minded, young men find their way into these parts. And with them come these views of glorifying violence, defending your own people, etc. This is what happens when you have a people’s sport, strip it from any people’s ideology and turn it into a multi billion euro soulles industry. My team used to be a factory workers’ team but nothing remains of that. It’s just a regional team now. A multi million euro team, with the sole purpose of generating profit. The fans have no say in it.

Wherever patriarchal, violent, status quo ideologies are upheld and wherever they face no confrontation, they will flourish.

But times are changing. Women’s football is coming up and they are much more based imo. Gay people in football still have a long way to go but at least it is talked about today. And there are still lots of left wing clubs to be found.

I wonder if football culture in the US is any better, as from what I know, football (soccer) is considered more often to be a sport for women, particularly young girls. Is football culture there less right wing and toxic?

Yeah, a shame they immediately removed and banned this person, this was probably just an idiot child. It’s not like their one sentence is going to destroy Stalin’s legacy.

I would have been happy to explain the other flaws in the historical works of Simon Sebag Montefiore.

To put it simply, he is a pro-Romanov British man who was in Jeffrey Epstein’s contact book.

But the “Siberian comedy” treats the alleged victim like a punchline without providing any evidence. He clearly finds it funny.

      Yeah, though two notes:

      1. “Crisis of faith” is pretty uncomfortable in the context, really sounded like anticommunist high on their propganda (specifically really common take that communism is a religion)
      2. Even ignoring point 1, it seem like the usual bad faith question to own the commies, so mod was right to boot this out.

Sure but lots of people have superficial attachments to phrases they pick up online. I’ve just seen a lot of incoherent/bad irony-mixed-with-sincerity posting and I give people a shot across the bow first. If the followup to being debunked is more playing dumb then you know.

It’s not like everyone visiting the site can remember how to counter this story. Keep in mind Montefiore is a very mainstream historian so this will keep coming up. I’ve seen a lot of people fail to reply to this in full. It’s good to remind people about the extent to which the historians we don’t read make fallacious claims and how to approach them.

It’s a shame, because the entire debunk sort of exposes how desperate people were to heap lies on his legacy.

I really see the whole Lemmy/Reddit moderation strategy as a failed experiment but it hasn’t completely killed the sites at least. Extreme pruning down to seriously out of touch people.
