There is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy.
I wonder if he’ll be thinking about the irony of having said that when Trump is in office, democracy is dead and he’s plummeting 20 floors to his death after one of Trump’s operatives has thrown him out a window.
There is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy.
But January 6th was totally fine. Right? The courts seem to think so. The Democrats sure seem determined to hand the country over to the fascists.
They have been enacting political violence against other countries and their own citizen themself during their presidency
Why should we be relieved that a fascist fucker, who is the embodiment of human refuse, who has tried to overthrow our government before, and has promised to do it again, just got a huge campaign boost? Didn’t we learn these lessons in the 30’s? At least Hitler actually got some jail time, but I guess 4 damned years isn’t long enough for the courts to hand out a single sentence.
Because politics. That’s it. That’s the whole reason. If Trump had actually died it would give MAGA assholes even more “proof” that the “liberals” are out to get them. Since he survived everyone is working overtime to attempt to prevent the right from spiraling things even more out of control. Personally I would have been fine if he didn’t make it, but that would also harden the MAGA crowd.
I mean, the left is out to get them, and they’re out to get the left. When I was younger people of different political beliefs talked about them, found commonalities, and agreed to disagree on certain topics that they strongly felt the other was wrong about. Now everyone is out to get “the other side”, as if we were total enemies. Of course trump and the people like trump that came before him, like Rush Limbaugh, engineered it to be this way. If we’re all busy fighting each other, then we’re not watching them as they pillage the nation.
When I was younger…
You’re over 250 years old?
From my studying of history American politics have been “us” vs “them” since George Washington stepped down after two terms.
It was even before that. Washington had a rough second term thanks to “us” is “them”.

This would be the context I suspect was in that comment. I’m of the 40-some crowd and even I recall things being a lot more give and take in the past. In the last decade or two it has gotten to a point where it’s almost pointless to call a vote, just count the D/R ratio in a chamber and you have the result.
While dems play this controlled opposition civility card, Republicans will be mobilizing their supporters and riling them up completely unchecked because yeah maybe calling for violence is bad but calling somebody bad for doing so is worse
“Respectability” should be a swear word. Even rolling it around my tongue feels like I’m tonguing raw sewage, or maybe a particularly used condom. It implies a certain standard of behavior. To those who aim to be respectable, the standard is of civility, of fair-mindedness, of calm, reasonable debate and jovial disagreement. To those who don’t give a fuck about that bullshit, it stinks of elitist posturing, of valuing messaging over content, and of Puritan control. That’s how the scumfucks get away with it, you understand. They decry your tone, your language – not your content.
Not the thing that really matters, but the distraction of respectability and civility and propriety. Because you see, it makes them uncomfortable. They don’t like to be reminded that their policies affect real human beings. That would make it nearly impossible for some of them (not all, of course, there are some real fucking sociopaths there) to pass bills that cut welfare spending, or to authorize missile sales to Saudi Arabia
…Ultimately, a call for respectability is a call to take your beating with a smile, because you are serving the interests of their narrowly-defined democracy. But isn’t decency a good thing? Shouldn’t civility be a goal we all strive for, especially for public figures?
No.
Here’s the fucking truth – everyone is a fucking asshole, especially those who claim that they just want some “decency.” How do I know this? Because the same people who claim “civility” are the people who authorize defense appropriations for arms sales to theocrats, the people whose idea of a “humane homeless policy” is to put spikes on public benches, the people who think fascists can be defeated by hugs. Embracing “respectability” over content, and over values, is promoted primarily by those that have the privilege of ignoring the deleterious effects of said policy.
…Don’t play by the rules of the oppressor, because their rules are specifically designed to silence you, to negate you, to ignore you.

What is it with assassin’s and being shit at their job? Dude was on a roof with a rifle and he wings his ear? This is Regan all over again.
He didn’t have a proper sniper with a good scope, it was just, reportedly, an “AR-15 style rifle.” In which case, good shot. Very good shot. That’s a long ways, and proper sniper equipment is hard to get and harder to conceal.
Edit: I had no clue how close this actually was, at the time of writing the details hadn’t been released. 150 yards… yeah even I could make that shot. How do you miss that…
Depending on the distance and wind, it might still be a bad shot. Trump was mostly a still silhouette. Any boot out of US Marine Corps boot camp would have hit him one out of two shots easy with an AR-15 from 500 yrds away in the prone position. Even more proficient if they were able to use any sort of support like a bipod.
Sure, a boot who was trained to use that rifle could have made the shot. So could a half decent hunter. But by all accounts this was just some dude, with no training, no scope, no bipod, and likely full knowledge of his impending death. Can’t really blame the guy for being a bit twitchy on the trigger.
Nonsense. Any decent AR15 with a scope you can buy from Bass Pro is sufficient for a beginner to make an easy shot like that all day.
Trump’s life has no positive value. The problem is that some of the unwell people who worship will make him a martyr, and amp-up the hate crimes, or doing something awful to people voting.
Best-case scenario, he loses the election then dies in a way that can’t be considered noble, or turn him into a hero. Drowning in diarrhea gets my vote.
And we all know how to stop those hate crimes, but we’re not allowed to talk about violence.
I have no problem with the flag I carry at pride having a thick enough handle to deal with a problem if it arises.
I have no problem with punching nazis.Trump will make the world a better place when he dies, I don’t want him to dies as some kind of hero.
One thing is for certain: his grave will have the prettiest flowers and lushest grasses because of how many people will shit on it.
This ☝️
I hate Trump and his posse, but had the attempt been successful Trump would have become a martyr.
He has already made himself a symbol for the alt-right, and becomming a martyr, that terrifies me.
I may not be American, but this shit affects the entire planet.
This is even worse, because he is a martyr now.
Yeah people are saying “Too bad he missed!” They don’t realize that the real problem isn’t Trump, It’s his cult of millions. The best way this shakes out is for him to lose the election and his relevancy. Then for him to quietly die of old age.
No. Hard disagree. Trump is a classic cult of personality. They flock to him for his bombastic rhetoric and his hateful “no holds barred” speech. (can you say beerhall putsch boys and girls?
You take the personality out of the cult of personality, it folds. Maybe not right away, but it folds.
Making him a martyr would only matter if his followers, or his own ideals, stood for anything at all. But they (and his ideas) don’t. They’re just rabid dogs who enjoy someone who dares to say the quiet part loud. Once that’s gone, they’re effectively cowards with no direction.
Have to agree with this, and the simple reason is this - who does Trump have on his side that he will pass the torch to?
No one. There are other grifters on side, but he’s not endorsed anyone younger to be the future of “his” movement. Arguably, a Trump loss would absolutely ruin the Republican party because so much of its attention has been on Trump and his cronies, instead of who has the presence to lead in 5 years time.
In this event, do you really think that once Trump has served two terms that he will realistically endorse someone? No, it’s all about him. MAGA lives and dies with him, and any attempt to take over what he started would likely have Trump disowning or clowning them as not being on his level.
And you think they’ll just quietly pack up and leave once Trump is gone? All that power is going to be just left on the table? No one’s going to capitalize on being bombastic and saying the quiet part out loud to sit on the throne themselves?
I think they’ll try. But Trump supporters are loyal to one man…Trump.
The closest analogy would be Mussolini. (The fuckers even stand similarly and use the same mannerisms).
How long did Mussolini’s cult last after he was dragged into the street and shot? How long did it take his last supporters to vanish like cowards as soon as he was longer up on the balcony in a building with his face on it thumping his chest.
Trump is no different.
I hope you’re right, but during Mussolini’s time the Axis was failing and I don’t think taking the power of his followers was worth the target that would be painted on your back from every other world power. The MAGA cult stands to take control of the most powerful nation in the world with the undying support of its followers permitting any action including taking away their own freedom. I don’t think that’s something that will be left on the table once Trump is gone.
Without Trump the cult would be finished. There is nobody who can replace him in the far right camp.
While there isn’t anyone who has the charisma of Trump as far as I can tell, he has a cult of personality, and carefully exploited it could serve R for decades, regardless of the leader.
Appointing Trump posthumously as chairman for eternity would be very in character for the present day Republicans.
I think you’re forgetting what already happened with Ron DeSantis. Without the real Trump to shut them down, his potential successors will come out of the woodwork drooling at the sight of his empty throne.
Ron DeSantis
You can be a monster with charisma. Or you can be a caring person with a less than social personality
You can’t be a monster with no charisma. That’s the problem with everyone else in potential GOP leadership. It why they had little success until Trump came along. His monster came cloaked in charisma.
In short, Trump is the only GOP leader whose followers don’t actually hate his guts. Boebert, DeSantis, MTG don’t have people who actually like them, even on their own side.
Just because the crazies already existed doesn’t make it good/neutral to encourage, unite, and embolden them.
Agreed. And assassinating Trump would have united and emboldened them.
The best take I’ve seen is that Democrats should take this opportunity, dust off an old gun control bill that failed, rename it the President Trump Assassination Prevention Act and try to pass it. Republicans will still vote against it, but they’ll be on record as voting against the President Trump Assassination Prevention Act.
Oh yes, that’s going to help Democrats get their eventual nominee elected. A gun control bill, right now, when most of the party is sending out thoughts and prayers for the bullet.
Lmfao
Trump, if either Obama, Bernie, or Biden got shot at:
“TOO BAD THE SHOOTER MISSED. WE NEED TO GET THESE DEMONCRATS OUT OF HERE ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. WE GOTTA MAKE AMERICA BEAUTIFUL AND GREAT AGAIN PEOPLE!”
Too coherent, not believable unless someone else wrote it.
Haha! I haven’t listened to the guy “talk” since the debate in 2020, because he hurts my brain with just how fucking moronic he is. I’m sorry!
Thanks Obama.
The only thing more American than apple pie is political violence.
Or, just violence in general. Violence in the political sphere is the result of just general violence everywhere.
Trump: “Obama is correct, there is no place for violence in our democracy. That’s why I’m getting rid of democracy, to make room for plenty of violence”
This really needs to be redone by Key & Peele’s anger translator
“democracy” lol US is a plutocracy, a dictatorship of capital.
“There is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy…”
Ummmm…I hate to the be the bearer of bad news, but your democracy was born from violence. It’s quite literally the defining characteristic of your founding as a nation.
And I’m not suggesting that there is anything wrong with that. In fact I think the whole “violence has no place” schtick is naive to the core and no real change in history has ever occurred without violence.
The French Revolution was just a bunch of scrubs walking around until someone finally pulled out the guillotine. Hitler was just being “appeased” until he finally crossed a line in Poland. Napoleon laughed off diplomacy until the entire european world said “enough is enough”.
non-violence just delays the inevitable. I’m sorry if that’s an unpopular opinion, but it’s been proven true again and again and again.
