Here in dutch supermarkets they have several types.

Jumbo (a supermarket) has handheld scanners you take when entering the store and you scan as you go along, it shows all items, the price and total. The cart has a holder for the scanner too. Once done you head to a checkout booth and hand the cashier your scanner. They checkout and sometimes do a random check of some items and you are done and can pay. Jumbo also has several normal checkouts open usually.

Albert Heijn (competing supermarket) have the handheld scanners, self checkout booths where you can scan yourself, or checkout the handheld, and normal registers. But more importantly there is always staff in the self checkout area to help and to do spot checks if the machine randomly selects you.

I find myself using all 3 methods as time and convenience dictate.
