I saw the Wayne’s World sketches back when they were broadcast, since I’m old. My memory is of finding them funny at first, and that then—as with anything snl—they became lazy and were just repeating their gimmicks and catchphrases a lot.
Some days back, I found myself looking at some clips that promised to have all of the WW sketches. There were some good gags, but I was surprised to see the characters were more dickish than I’d remembered. And I hadn’t remembered that they relied so heavily on top ten lists. In the comments, people were pissed off that the clips actually left out quite a few, including the first three or four. Someone mentioned that the first one used the word “fag”, so they weren’t surprised that snl wanted to pretend it never happened. I think I watched one set of maybe eight sketches.
Earlier today, I happened to see Myers’ telling of the first script, that other writers looked at it, called it shit, and threw it off the pile. That he was intimidated, but then he did put it back on the pile. Add some drama of there being time to do the sketch at the very end of the episode, and then the rest is history. Definitely aiming to give the impression that those writers were just trying to fuck him over.
So I found the first sketch, and it was in fact very weak. Phil Hartman as Garth’s bucktoothed dad. That must be the reason for the overbite. And Wayne calls him a fag. Jan Hooks as a girl Wayne tricks into thinking he likes her as a mean joke. A caller whose girlfriend (or was it just date?) has passed out, and the guys point out that since she’s unconscious, he can do whatever he likes. The end.
