What I’ve found helpful in making these types of people question their bloodthirsty beliefs, or at least backtrack on them IRL, is to ask them what they would do if they were Ukrainians in Ukraine now, or if they had a home or loved ones there. Even the most rabid ones usually stop after hearing this, if anything because they see how deranged their stance is. I doubt it would make random libs online back down, since shame doesn’t play a big role in anonymous spaces, but still

That’s also my impression with all the Baltics. And certainly 9 out of 10 Baltic people I’ve met didn’t do anything to dispel that impression

This reminds me a lot of the attitude people have in my country towards immigrants from the Global South - they view them with benign curiosity more than anything. I do worry it will get worse in time, in no small part due to worsening material conditions and an overall reactionary population. But it’s a very different context compared to China

It’s a bit disappointing to see takes such as 留岛不留人 are common enough to have their own slogans that are known even to people outside the circles who don’t support this (anecdotal, but that Chinese émigré I mentioned in the post also referred to this slogan). For the Japan part, I’m not surprised - I’ve heard casual calls for genocide by people of some countries against other countries for far smaller historical offenses. Not surprised there’s so much animosity towards Japan, given all they’ve done and how they treat the issue to this day. Still a horrible take to call for genocide, obviously, but I’m not surprised that there is a niche of society thinking like this. I bet you can find nazi/genocide enthusiasts in any country

From what I’ve seen, neither are libs fazed by MAD. People I’ve spoken to IRL seem to be in agreement that NATO should’ve already invaded/nuked Russia. For real, it’s such a vague retort that I just changed topics afterwards, because I didn’t even know where to start. Whose dictatorship over who? Why are you opposed to this? What does the opposite situation say about countries like the US and why is that good if this is bad?

It’s so ingrained in their mind they’ll always give a knee-jerk response like this so they don’t have to go through the pain of challenging their worldview (instead it seems they’d rather choose the pain of continually worsening exploitation and living standards)
