If there’s a path with a lot of pedestrians on it, I don’t think it’s unreasonable that cyclists are expected to get off their bike and walk like everybody else.

I had my jaw fractured because some speeding JustEat delivery man came blasting through a pedestrian area of Newcastle on his bike, clearly not paying attention.

That said, I’m very saddened by dualling the A1 in remaining parts of Northumberland where it’s still single lane is being scrapped.

It’s an 8 mile stretch and a 5 mile stretch, both surrounded by inexpensive grassland or farmland. It would take a trivial amount of money to do, yet improve the infrastructure here massively.

The amount of times I’ve seen ambulances stuck in traffic or even waiting at junctions along the A1 up here is crazy.

Seemingly everywhere else the A1 has 3 lanes. If this was in the south east not the north east, it would have money thrown at the problem until it was fixed.

It’s certainly not a magic silver bullet that singlehandedly fixes our low wage economy like a lot of people on Reddit/Lemmy appear to expect, but it’s a positive step at least.

I just really hope there’s serious infrastructure and employment investment, particularly in the seriously impoverished areas like the North East of England. And I hope their planning permission changes will actually have a noticeable effect. Time will tell.

You are mistaken if you think countries had leverage to make demands but chose not to use it out of charity.

My guess is that there are two main factors.

Part of it may be that “tankie” comes from UK political discourse (originally used as an insult from members of the UK Communist Party who wanted to distance themselves from their crazier members who defended the Soviet Union using tanks against civilians to squash anti-soviet demonstrations).

Since then the term has evolved to mean any westerner that acts as a mouthpiece or apologist for the likes of Russia/China.

It’s possible that what with Russia’s actions as of late, more of the world is being exposed to the term.

The other factor, and one that impacts Lemmy in particular, is that there is a massive tankie presence on Lemmy. In fact the original Lemmy developers were tankies, and lemmy.ml (marxists-lenninist) was their preferred instance. Hexbear is another massive tankie instance.
