  • If that were the case, which I hard doubt, then the solution would be to target suppliers with enhanced consumer and business laws that make it illegal to charge different prices for the same product and volume; they should ultimately require absolute transparency for pricing up the entire supply chain, too. Shine light on everywhere the price gouging and exploitation are taking place.

I believe it’s not currently illegal for retailers to advertise and charge 2 different customers 2 different sets of targeted prices, and it should be, as retailers are nearing the capability to alter the shelf price based on the customer standing in front of it. This exploitation attack vector should be cut off before they try to get away with it (probably already are).

  • Yep. It was infuriating to know in Feb that everything was gonna shutdown and watching the Libs drag their feet for weeks. They waited until everyone who could voluntarily isolate already was, and reasserted that Conservatism is too selfishly incompetent to ever make tough decisions and lead anything or anyone. It’s a miracle we didn’t have a domestic outbreak like Italy; thousands of boomers and up would’ve been fucked.

More of a recent virtue signal we’ve been propagandized to believe, while continuing the conquering and displacement without skipping a beat.

While the west was writing the UN declaration of human rights, they were hard at work creating the state of Israel, directly denying Palestine their right to democracy and displacing a million of them.

At the end of WW2 America, and the rest of the anglo-allies, assisted France in trying to reclaim their colonies, rejecting hundreds of millions their “basic human right” to democracy; all of this went on for decades after the declaration was ratified, as if that meant anything.

Human rights don’t apply as long as you are labelled a communist, terrorist, separatist, extremist, pedo, etc, etc. Then they can torture you in a black site all nice and legal.

Most of our history has been written by sociopathic criminals.

  • Fuck that. These laws almost always seem like a move BY surveillance capitalism to ID all user traffic, using the state (regulatory capture or bribery) under the guise of “child protection”. If we lived in actual democracies, instead of capitalist plutocracies, the easiest way to universally apply this and preserve civil liberties would be to incorporate a broad age indicator — “adult”, “teen”, and “child” — into every web comms protocol. If it were at the OS / browser level parents could then setup a child or teen account and, unless the child figures out the admin password, they’re stuck with it; every request their device makes to the Internet will include it.

Then every site would only be responsible for checking that value and required to block “child” &/or “teen” from specific services or content… That’s basically how ID’s work when you visit your local alcohol dealer or sex shop - “adult” / “not adult” is all they need to know … Hell, ban all advertising, data capture, use of analytics in content discovery, etc for non-adults. Let children use the internet the way it was before parasites took over. No friction for every user. No requirements for people to hand over their PII to countless corporations (which should be limited as much as possible). No games of whack-a-mole. At the end of the day there will always be workarounds, but it’s the parents responsibility to monitor their children; not the internets, or rest of society.

  • I’ve always felt this way about tankies and the horseshoe theory in general. Conservatism spawned from the “Bourgeoise”; all the religious lords and landowners who profited from, and supported, monarchs and authoritarian rule. Tankie belief systems align with that “bourgeoise” perfectly.

The concept of authoritarian socialism is a contradiction. Without democracy, freedom of thought, and freedom of person — from fear of retribution for wrongthink — the workers never had a say; never “seized” control of anything. Tankies are nothing more than a continuation of the authoritarian rule that came before them. Both Hitler and Trump have said they represent the wprking class. Saying you represent the working class is meaningless. You need to prove it with your actions.

Ultimately tankies are closer to the Tsars, Kings, and colonialism they replaced, than they are to the concept of freedom and equality for the working class. They just want to be the oppressor, and probably believe that communism is the best chance they have to ever be in a position to fulfil that role.

  • I too am intrigued why tankies would support islamic fundamentalists murdering leftist french journalists… Doesn’t add up… My only guess (beyond the general mental illness tankies display) is that French colonialism fucked up cultures around the world for centuries — across south America, Africa, and Asia — and they still hold political and military control over a few of them… But why cheer islamic terrorism? Why cheer the murder of leftist journos?

This sub should require links to the offending thread, so users can view in context. Otherwise this could’ve been posted anywhere. I’d expect this screenshot from the likes of Truth Social.

IMO the “replicate reddit, but decentralized” approach will be the downfall of Lemmy. You sound like you’re trying to do the right thing, but there is significantly more moderator centralization and authoritarianism on Lemmy than there was on early reddit. Most of the early reddit mods were people who genuinely had an interest or experience in that subs topic; not the tankie or excommunicated from elsewhere simply “domain squatting” dozens of popular community names and then dictating over them once they grew popular; trying to carve out their own personal safe space soap boxes. I have seen dozens of mods who’ll debate someone and when they lose they just delete all of the opposing comments and ban the user they disagree with. Often they are the one and only mod of that community.

Users left Reddit because they didn’t wanna have to deal with continued enshittification and unaccountable bad faith mods on a power trip. Lemmy only solved the former, and doubled down on the latter, while fragmenting users across numerous duplicate communities about the same topic; leading to significant post duplication amongst a sea of inactive duplicate communities.

If Lemmy doesn’t solve its core issues I don’t expect it to last long and will move elsewhere sooner than later. I feel like users should be able to join a group of communities about the same topic, and moderator control should be both diluted and distributed amongst them. As in, redistribute moderation across the user base by randomly showing a group of users a post/comment and using the average rather than relying on whoever created the sub to act in good faith. Decentralized services should be built as trustless/adversarial; expect and account for bad faith actors. I wouldn’t have any problem being required to moderate a post/comment for every post/comment I make, I just don’t want the responsibility of being a permanent mod, nor having to review every single thing myself.

  • Customizability, and most importantly portable customizability, is non-existent in most modern software. Even highly configurable FOSS products like Firefox take time, effort, and above average technical skills to mirror configs between not only clients, but identical clients, and even just keeping them in sync. You shouldn’t have to log into their cloud or jump through hoops; just export a config file(s) and import it onto another machine; if versions are identical, the state of the product and its feature-set should be identical (e.g. not temp, session, or 3rd party data; though in the case of Firefox all extension configs should apply too, as they are part of its ecosystem/feature-set).

As a consumer, I often wish that there were a requirement for ALL digital product software and services to export/import their current config, including all “user” data, to open-source compatible, lossless formats — this would be the most effective method to free consumers and businesses alike from vendor lock-in and monopolization — but as a developer I’m aware that would be a nightmare, especially for all pre-existing software.
