Thanks for the update! Was the DoS attack targeting just lemm.ee or were other instances hit as well?
I just started to see some new posts in the last hour but not yet seeing some of the posts/comments that I know have been made in the last day. I suspect it’s getting fixed but having to juggle between pulling in new stuff and syncing on older stuff
I was thinking it was a really quiet weekend but had been out and about and looked again and realized all the posts I was seeing were at least a day or two old. Looked at other instances via the web at communities I know are active and they all had stuff, but I couldn’t see them when logged into lemm.ee.
Do you need a hug? It sounds like you need a hug.
And jokes on you, I was conceived in the backseat of a car. Don’t you feel foolish now?
Wow, I never realized you could see outraged, frothing at the mouth spittle flying around via text before. Thanks for the educational moment.
He’s also not specific about what additional support it is he’d give Israel. I don’t really believe he could give them more than Biden and Harris are. What, materially, could he do for them that Biden would refuse to? He didn’t offer specifics atleast.
So you’re expecting restraint from the guy behind an attempted coup? The guy who had to be talked out of wanting to nuke North Korea? Listen, I’m not expecting to change anyone’s mind - we’re obviously coming at this from different perspectives. It’s not just “both sides bad”, it’s that all sides are bad, or at least imperfect, and you need to make a choice.
I prefer the deeply problematic former law enforcement politician who will never be exactly what I want versus the nearly-octogenarian lying, cheating, clearly insane guy who I believe would be the biggest step towards a civil war, World War III, or both.
I want Palestinian lives to be saved, I want Ukrainian lives to be saved, I want American lives to be saved. I want clean air and water for the generations to come. I want everyone, not just Americans, to have a chance at a better life and control over their own lives and bodies. Chances are I may not get any of those things, but my best shot at getting any of them is to vote for the person who seems the most sane. It’s the only choice I have.
Oh no! A cutting remark about my username!!! However will I survive?!
You really should be more careful. I could be in the room with you right now!
I should know better, but sure, I’ll bite. You want specifics of what Trump thinks?
https://www.reuters.com/world/netanyahu-denies-report-he-spoke-trump-about-gaza-talks-2024-08-15/
In an event later on Thursday about tackling antisemitism, Trump criticized Biden and Harris’ months-long calls for a ceasefire in Gaza.
“From the start, Harris has worked to tie Israel’s hand behind its back, demanding an immediate ceasefire, always demanding ceasefire,” Trump said, adding it “would only give Hamas time to regroup and launch a new October 7 style attack.”
Trump added: “I will give Israel the support that it needs to win but I do want them to win fast.”
In the same event, Trump also labelled pro-Palestinian supporters calling for an end to U.S. support for Israel’s war as “pro-Hamas thugs” and “jihad sympathizers.” He threatened to arrest and deport them from the U.S. if he became president.
Netanyahu’s office and Trump both separately denied on Thursday an Axios report that said they had spoken the previous day about Gaza ceasefire and hostage release talks.
This was back in August, and the dude has Bibi on speed dial. If he cared one iota, he could have been leaning on Netanyahu and making public calls for an end to Israel’s crimes since this started. But he hasn’t and he’ll do far worse if elected. Hell, he’ll send US ground troops throughout the region killing civilians right and left if the price is right. And sell Ukraine down the river too. Never trust a narcissist to have anyone else’s interest at heart.
Hypothetically and only for the sake of argument, let’s say Harris “supports genocide”. We know Trump supports …let’s call it “Genocide+”. What does that leave? I believe most people think Harris will make getting a permanent ceasefire and supporting a two state solution central tenets of her administration. And Trump will do something insane that will threaten many more innocent lives across the entire region.
You can cast a vote for the imperfect candidate (which is every candidate ever), you can cast a vote for the candidate most likely to start World War III. Or you can cast a vote for Grima Wormtongue, oops I mean Jill Stein, who is on the take from both the Russians and the GOP, and end up helping WWIII guy. Those are your options. It’s not necessarily a fun choice, but it shouldn’t be a hard one.
Am I right in thinking this might screw with any autonomous vehicles that don’t rely on LIDAR? (which I think is mainly Tesla at this point?)
Ahh, you’re talking the risk assessments and the associated floodplain maps. So yes, many of the maps are decades out of date, despite the legal requirement they keep them updated.
Those maps, by nature, are based on historical data but then use projections to assign future risk assessments. My point was that while we may have consensus on increases in global temperature, what that means for specific areas is almost impossible to forecast in a way that wasn’t true before. For example, we know that major ocean currents may be in danger because of global warming, but we don’t know when or if that will happen and exactly what exact effect it will have on a specific parcel of land, and that effect may be quite acute.
Between extreme weather events, changes in land use, etc., the unprecedented nature of the changes we’re facing and the complexities involved mean that no matter how accurate the previous data and no matter how bleeding edge the climate modeling we use, any new maps are going to be much more unreliable than they’ve been previously.
And because those maps are expressly tied to the National Flood Insurance Program, that means potentially billions being lost because the map was wrong. Of course the map is wrong now, but that’s unfortunately how bureaucracies think - better to be wrong because of inaction rather than sticking your neck out.
The real problem going forward is that the very fundamental idea of being able to map weather risk is a fiction. It would be far better to assume most areas are going to see extreme flooding and then judge how resilient the area is to that flooding and make policy decisions based on that. Even with perfect maps and models, people in the next 50 years need to understand that there will be no climate havens and that it’s not a question of if you’ll experience an extreme weather event but when.
But that’s the thing, we keep finding out our models are wrong or inadequate. You can model anything you want, but it’s only going to be as good as your base data and hypothesis on how to project that forward. We keep seeing “once a century” storms happen years apart, “once every 500 year storms” happen within the same decade, etc.
That’s what those flood maps involve - models based on previous patterns, but they fail when the patterns no longer apply.
I’m not saying there’s no point to modeling, just we shouldn’t be surprised when they underperform or are wrong. As the saying goes, “we don’t know what we don’t know”.
This isn’t surprising or even something we can address. You can’t really plan for the unprecedented.
Luckily, Spanish already has the perfect word: Toxicos. Which just means toxic men. I think I may just sub that in whenever referring to the state :)
Interesting take. I look at it as less “anti-medieval” and more anti-government. Gygax was a libertarian and it grew out of wargaming. Gygax just wanted a world where he could fight dragons and didn’t bother to do the world building of an economic or political system. I think this was more out of disinterest in the topics rather than as a political stance.
Never said it didn’t. Doesn’t change the fact that Microsoft is notoriously worse by every metric and because of its position in the market is far more potentially damaging. Almost like if you sell an OS as something that can be trusted to run mission critical applications, you probably shouldn’t phone it in when it comes to securing that OS.
A third party vendor whose entire business model is predicated on the fact that security is such an afterthought at Microsoft that enterprise customers need to resort to this kind of crap for a bare minimum of security.

No idea on the song, may have better luck identifying the singer, and working backwards from there? Maybe something by Fine Young Cannibals? Certainly the most notable falsetto that comes to mind for that era for me.
