I’d word it more like “Sorry I don’t feel comfortable discussing my personal life at work”, that way it takes the onus off of the person and keeps it neutral.

Sounds like you’re doing well then. I do the same with contributing to FOSS (and I maintain a couple FOSS projects) and I teach younger devs at work, and have a blog (technically two), so I’m in the same boat.

I know this may sound like satire but you can write a blog and share your knowledge and experiences. It may seem weird at first, but it’s an actual option, and people could organically come across your blog, especially if you use the right keywords that they’re looking for.

Damn, that’s crazy. Here I am being happy that I have their older consoles that I’m still playing their best older games, even with modding them and using flashcarts too etc. I guess retro gamers are a bit of a dying breed, but there’s still some people out there like me.

People buy into the BS sold by companies, they eat it all up without thinking twice about it. It’s easier to point fingers at each other than at companies when companies are paying so much money to attack end-users.

The weird thing is, corporations can’t even make any money from these older games. I guess they think that means people who can’t play older games will just buy their newer garbage, and yet that’s not how it works at all lol people just end up buying indie games instead these days.

My first job I was using Windows, thankfully I was able to use Linux my next 3 jobs in a row. It really helps justify Linux when our production servers are always running Linux.

Part of being an adult is never getting enough sleep and almost always being tired.

I think even if they do reverse course or it was a genuine mistake, it’s easy to lose people’s trust forever, ESPECIALLY when it comes to something sensitive like storing ALL of your passwords.

For me, the biggest thing was the program not running from a single window. IIRC there was actually a separate fork of GIMP that made it run in a single window called GIMPshop or something, and that made it into a single window. I’m not sure when GIMP itself got single window functionality.

It’s a lot more usable these days.

You can generally install Linux on any computer you want, entirely for free. You don’t need to buy a new computer, you just install it like any other operating system.

Also there’s often live USB environments where you can boot from the USB but try it out before dedicating to installing it on your SSD/hard drive. You could technically even dual boot but that can have its own problems.

As always, back up your data when trying out things.

For basic things like web browsing, watching videos, and reading emails, Linux is excellent. It’s when you start getting into more power-user type stuff where you have to learn more about how things work on Linux.

if anything is preventing people from switching it’s Linux users, and probably developers as well. if you make it look like people have to have a degree to get into your shit, they’re not gonna do it.

The thing is, I agree with you, and unfortunately it’s actually a common misconception how difficult Linux is to use. You can easily install a beginner-friendly distro like Ubuntu/Mint/PopOS and get started that way, it doesn’t have to be daunting. It’s free to try out and you have nothing to lose by giving it a try, you could always go back to Windows.

I got lucky that my last 3 jobs have all let me use Linux on a work laptop, but I guess it’s not too surprising since I work as a web developer and production always runs on Linux lol

We would need all peasants doing it at once. One peasant doing it just means you get your head cut off, which unfortunately doesn’t help.

I can’t imagine that they won’t be removing it eventually though.

It will never understand context and business rules and things of that nature to the same extent that actual devs do.

I can understand both sides and I’ve been on both sides. Wanting to donate to show appreciation and help support an awesome project, and not accepting donations due to creating the burden of unfair support/development expectations for a volunteer project.

It really is such a cool extension.
