The “both sides” thing, as you put it, is acknowledging that Hamas started this current round of violence with its horrifying actions on October 7th, which is the truth. But she also specifically called for Palestinians to have the right to self-determination and autonomy, which is further than Biden was willing to go.

Israel is currently being run by a corrupt madman. Sadly, so are its neighbors, particularly Iran. That puts the United States in the unenviable position of trying to prevent Israel’s destruction (which would be a once-in-a-century horror) while trying to pressure the corrupt madman in charge of it to end his own genocidal assault on Gaza.

Now imagine Trump in charge. Trump would be actively working to make things much, much worse.

It blows my mind that anyone could be undecided now, but clearly there are folks out there who simply do not in any way follow the news or put any effort into understanding the candidates or issues until the very last minute.

It’s a mindset I simply don’t get.

Yep. I always want to give people the benefit of the doubt, but when they reveal themselves to be actual proud bigots, the likelihood that they’ll bring interesting and engaging conversation to the table drops to zero.

I just finally blocked the source of most of it. Wow, that guy’s active.

What pisses me off the most about that is the game of make-believe about Palestine that the wedgies (I think I’ll call them that from now on) try to play.

It is 100% understandable and reasonable to be pissed about Israel’s treatment of Palestine. It is not OK to pretend it happened for no reason.

The fact of the matter is that the whole situation is an atrocious mess with horrid, horrific behavior by absolute monsters on all sides. To downplay any of it, whether the horrific response by Israel to being attacked, or the horrific attack itself, is to do any serious attempt to address it and cut through the Gordian knot of Middle East problems a disservice.

I’ve maintained, and continue to maintain, that there’s currently no right answer. If Israel collapses, that will be a nightmare the likes of which we haven’t seen in a century, so we have to ensure it can defend itself by supplying it weapons. Netanyahu is a madman who wants to commit genocide against the Palestinians and is desperate to hold onto power to avoid prison, so we have to stop supplying Israel with weapons.

See that? Both statements are defensible. Both statements have at least an element of truth. It’s fucking complicated. And I don’t have the answer.

But you know what I’m 100% certain we shouldn’t do? Let Donald fucking Trump get into office to truly fuck things up even more.

That’s very hopeful. A five-point spread can be overcome. And I’m still wondering what the polling error will be this year. For the last few years, Democrats have handily out-performed the polls, and it’s not like people under 50 are getting easier to poll.

But don’t get complacent. It’s possible the polls this year are over-correcting for that. We won’t know for sure until the election is over.
