Inspection went fine! Actually had the senior PM come, instead of the newbie from last time. Senior PM said newbie was wrong about the law regarding downlights, lol, and that it does in fact require an electrician that the RE will send out to change 😂 newbie told us it’s the tenants responsibility, but didn’t realise the difference between a screw in bulb and downlights LOL!

so after a year of not having kitchen lights, and six months of not having a normal bathroom one, the RE is gonna get that fixed for us. Senior PM apologised profusely and said we weren’t the only tenants that were given the incorrect info either.

    I couldn’t stop laughing! I’m not even mad 😂

Glad it went well for you!

My new house has had about half the lights changed out for those energy efficient LED light things. On the one hand, I was a bit disappointed about that, because I wanted to put my own energy saver smart bulbs in, but on the other, because they’re directly wired into the mains and there’s no fitting, it’s not my responsibility to change them when they go kaput

But on the third, my experience with those style of lights is that they’re lucky to last a year before they start developing a purple hue and flickering ever so slightly (enough to piss me the fuck off though), but I’m doubtful they’ll change them until they’re completely dead

I wanted to set up a mail redirection in case I forget to change my address for anything over, but wouldn’t you know it - not allowed to do that while you’re under. For “legal reasons”, they say

I'm really frustrated and disillusioned at the moment, and needed a rant. Open at your eyeballs' own risk

That actually made me really upset when I found out. Partially because by the time they bothered to tell me, I was already 3 quarters through the application and already sent in my ID, but also because it’s just such a stupid thing to age-gate, and seems like it was thought up by the mind of somebody who’s always lived a stereotypical upper class lifestyle

I know it’s inconsequential, but it really reeks of the sort of restriction some rich private schooled arsehole would impose. The sort that grew up in a stock standard, white picket fence, 2 parent households - who’s only struggles as a child were figuring out which one of their thousand dollar outfits to wear to their 80k a year private school, and one who never had to move around

At a surface glance, sure it seems logical to assume that every child will always move in sync with at least 1 of their parents, and can just be listed as a dependent on their parents redirection application. But in my situation, that just can’t happen. And it really isn’t just my situation that would necessitate redirecting your mail as a minor. Although less common than previous decades, some people do still get a job at 15/16 then move out. Some people move away for school or employment prospects. Some to escape violent home situations. Not everybody who moves out as a minor necessarily ends up in the child protection system

But the 1% tasked with running these shit shows don’t think of that. They just assume that the luxuries they got to grow up with and took for granted are universal. They are very much not. I’m sure somebody will point out that parents want to know what mail and parcels their kids receive, and that’s fine, I’m not saying every minor should automatically have a right to redirect or hold their mail. But there are so many supporting documents I could provide them - I have court orders, tenancy agreements, a lease, rent trails, I could even have the person acting on behalf of my guardian (in this case, my case manager) go in with me and backup what I’m saying. We could even go get a stat Dec written up

But even that isn’t an option. There’s no exemptions. No negotiations. It’s go be listed on a parents application, or go fuck yourself. Personal circumstances are irrelevant, and so is supporting evidence.

I know I live in an edge case - every fucking company and governmental agency wants to make damn sure I know that. But it gets exhausting having to deal with this BS day in and day out. Actually, one of my earliest memories of dealing with the bureaucratic nightmare that has been my life was not long after I entered care, I dared to want a library card. They refused my application because I was a minor and couldn’t get a signatory at the time. Another one of my earliest memories is when I had knee troubles from an incident that occurred many years ago and went to a physio. 9 month waitlist. Finally get in. She needs a piece of paper signed giving her consent to provide medical care, or whatever the piece of paper would’ve said. The worker wouldn’t/couldn’t do it. I just had to go home. Then COVID hit, and after another 9 month waitlist, the physio was just telling me what to do over the phone

I’m actually going to make a complaint about this to auspost, and when they inevitably come back in 2 business months to inform me they’ve investigated themselves and found their policies to be justified, I’m going to go to the postal industry ombudsman. And then I’m going to write angry letters to the ministers responsible for AP, and might even write another one to my federal MP. It has genuinely gotten me that riled up

Again, I know it’s first world problems, and at that, probably the most minor problem in DT history. But it is making me really irrationally angry and I want to do something about it

Sorry for the rant, if anybody read it. With all the talk about these social media bans, on top of the issues with buying knives, and now trying to get a fricking mail redirection I’m really feeling like I keep slipping through the gaps and am getting left behind by half brained ideas thought up by privileged people

did a bit of digging and they absolutely have special dispensation for DV, deceased estates and victims of natural disaster, but it must be a “special request”

might have to actually call them, or go to the GPO - lpo are franchisees, I don’t see them having the authority to kick it up.

It’s just that you keep putting it on them, as if they need to be the one to “turn things around” when their rant was specifically about external systems prejudicing them. They can’t “turn around” AusPost’s decision to deny them the ability to redirect their mail?

Basically, they are trying to ask these systems for help, and are being denied. So why put it on their shoulders? Why not be outraged that someone is falling through the gaps, through no fault of their own?

I get that you have good intentions here, but I feel like you’re kind of missing the point in a big way…

Meeting over! 2.5 hours later, I’m so exhausted. There was a few times I felt like I was giving garbled answers to questions asked on the spot, and also being in full focus for that long is pretty tough. But overall I think I presented and communicated well. Client seemed happy too so that’s what counts.

I think I deserve a takeaway pizza tonight and a night off any cooking.

Big work meeting this afternoon. I mean BIG, there’s a lot on the line. I’m as prepared as I can be and a bit more prep this morning. I was feeling super nervous about it yesterday. Calmer on waking up this morning but the nerves are coming back. Deep breaths help - I will be fine, it will go fine.

I laugh everytime I see a post on AustralianSpiders, where OP posts a picture of a black spider with a red stripe and asks “iS tHiS a ReDbAcK???”

The clue is in the name, my guy 😂😂😂

And yes, it was, and she’s gravid - enjoy OP! 😂😂

I like the ones where OP will show a bit of leg skin with a small welt and ask What bit me?

Um definitely something small and bitey 🤷‍♀️

Then you get the replies such as: Go and see a GP to Get to the Emergency Room immediately because my best friends dentist’s next door neighbour had that same bite and their leg fell off. This is no joke.

I used to have that thing where minor scratches would make my skin in that area go puffy. Actually you’ve just made me realize I haven’t gotten that in yonks

Any scratch, even from my fingernails, used to do it. Then it just stopped

About 6kg of cherries have now been picked. Probably that much again left on the tree if I was feeling enthusiastic enough to pick them.

Now I need to work out what to do with them - they are cooking cherries (morello), not sweet eating cherries. I’ll probably just pit & freeze them for now and do some baking later.

Try drying them. Pit a trayful and put them on a lined baking tray in a very low oven - 30-50 deg - basically the defrost function if your oven has one - with the fan on. Stir them about every hour or so until they dry to snapping point. Or stop at the shrivelled but still bendy stage and freeze them in a vacuum bag. I’ve heard of people drying them in a microwave but I’ve never done that and don’t know how. Dried cherries are a wonderful snack and really add something to cakes, mince pies etc. I’ve put them in chook stuffing too. Use them anywhere that calls for sultanas or currants or raisins.

I’ve dried cherries before and didn’t really use them. I might do a few to go in the next fruit cake I make - I have a dehydrator, which makes it much easier than the oven method. Although it is currently filled with chicken scraps destined for dog food, I really need to get onto packing that away too.

Made it to Kmart today and filled up a trolley with various things

Set for most of it now. Still need a vacuum and (indoor) bins though

It was a fucked fucking experience. Lines were long as, but in their infinite wisdom, they only put 1 poor woman on the checkouts

She was standing over us the whole time, apparently if you have too much, you can’t be trusted to scan your own things, and they either need to scan half of it for you, or stand over you watching you scan shit. We were trying to go methodically so we could organize a trolley and wouldn’t end dup setting a frying pan on the top of an upside down coffee cup. She was not happy about that and said (verbatim) “gimme gimme gimme now! we’re going to be here all day! Gimme!” And then snatched the scanning thing out of my hand and started going turbo mode

I don’t really blame her, she was seemingly expected to supervise a dozen self serves, and man the 1 assisted register while also helping old people navigate the self serve during probably the busiest time of year. But geez. A dog shit experience as a customer. And ffs snatching the scanner and rushing us didn’t actually do shit, it just meant she had to awkwardly stand there while we started repacking the trolley

Also feel like I should mention this was Kmart. I didn’t accidentally walk into Aldi. They don’t have packing benches - the alternative would’ve been throwing everything in the trolley, probably breaking and losing shit, then tipping it all out after paying to repack things sensibly

I don’t remember the lady that was standing over me, and am always polite when I say no, but maybe all that facial recognition stuff they have now sets off an alarm every time I walk in 😂

FWIW though, I do blame management, but also wonder what part Wesfarmers has to play in it. Staff cuts seem to be across the board at all of their businesses, at least Coles and Kmart. Even Coles now has 1 person dealing with the cigarette kiosk as well as the register next to it, or if that is closed, they also wear the self checkout assistant hat. I reckon there’s more to it than scummy store management - probably scummy middle and upper management (though I suppose that’s implied)
