  • It basically sidesteps any conversation about what you mean. If you said to the line or to your fellow waiters “no cherries” that wouldn’t make any sense. Like, in what context would they guess you meant that? You’d at the very least have to say “we have no more cherries”, which is much longer than saying “86 cherries”.

If you mean in the context of the OP, though, then yes I completely agree, the customer was being extra and not actually shortening what they were trying to say.

  • Working in fast food is pretty different from full restaurants. I worked fast food first, never heard the term until I started waiting tables a few years later. In fast food, there’s not as much of a chain of communication that requires pass phrases to get info across quickly. Just one kid with an order terminal and another kid assembling the order as it was entered.

All of that aside, if I hear someone use that term IRL, it does tend to sound pretentious because you’re basically using jargon outside of its typical area of use and expecting everyone to know wtf you’re talking about. It’s almost like you want someone to ask, so you can be like “you don’t kNoW???”

Probably people don’t mean to come off that way, but that is the vibe I catch most of the time.

Fucking thank you. Men’s libbers (and there’s a loooooot of them on lemmy, as you can see in your downvotes) like to trot out the “men don’t report because of stigma!” line, but it’s like, my guy, women do too?? For every woman brave enough to report, there’s anywhere from 5-10 that don’t report at all due to fear/stigma.

Of course rape happens to men (mostly by other men) too. But, couple things:

    1. it’s not a competition or dick measuring contest. Rape is bad, m’kay? Regardless of gender.
    2. it’s disingenuous to say that it happens to men just as much, or more. It feels icky, like they’re shoving themselves in a victimhood narrative where they don’t belong.

  • It was really depressing when I found that Pendleton, literally THE wool store, is mostly dealing in poly-wool blends now. That completely defeats the purpose of the wool?? A breathable fabric that stays warm when wet for winter, but can also keep you cool in summer? Yeah, let’s just shove some plastic in there. Fucking capitalist brain-rot of these companies, man.

EDIT: I wanted to chime back in and correct myself. Good news everyone, Pendleton’s clothes seem to be mostly all either wool or cotton again! I don’t know what was going on when I looked like a year ago, but they seem to have fixed their fuckery. I’ve never been happier to be wrong.

  • I do agree that the lack of a headphone jack absolutely kills me. It’s a reason I haven’t pulled the trigger either way on a new phone yet. On the one hand, I want a secure degoogled phone that maintains a lot of functionality with GOS. On the other, I want a modern phone with a headphone jack a la Sony. I go back and forth constantly.
