Dammit Sony, you just had to improve upon it and then you went and fucked it up with the Vita :/
and now the steamdeck replaced all of them.
honestly with how bulky and heavy it is it’s pushing the limits of portability. gone are the days of pocket transport! or maybe I should just get oversized pockets lol
It is more portable than a ps4/5 as some people will say that.
But steamdeck is right now the most “portable” modern device with the best price / performance value. it cant be carried like a ds in your pocket thats for sure but with a nice package it is pretty good to handle.
true true I love mine but I’m always scared to bring it anywhere because I feel like I’m gonna end up dropping it
I highly recommend dbrands KillSwitch case! It is expensive, but once you put that thing on the Deck, it literally feels so much better (and safer!) in my hands! The grip is the best I’ve ever seen!
Nope it is the ROG Ally : better design and form factor, better autonomy (OLED is fine but need more power), cheaper, better desktop solution (you can print), Xbox pass.
As usual dishonest people will down vote.
Windows on handheld is battery drain and UI/UX is the worst on there, worse design(i just say “destroying Microsd” and then not even repair that flaw and scam their customers from their repairs ), clump of plastic with no ergonomic, propiatary connector for external gpu ( steamdeck doesnt need that as its good enough for 99% ) cheaper? ??? Desktop solution and their “ROG Ally software” is crappy 10$ development. Linux > Windows on handheld for battery and performance. You only get windows for xbox game pass. ( There are alternatives on linux too i think ).
The prices are almost equal, steamdeck you can easier upgrade and have better support and community ( see you ), the oled on steamdeck is peak and controlls are the best there.
Steamdeck is a bit more portable as it isnt as THICK as the ROG Ally. + Valve doesnt iterate every year over their handheld but updates their os.
Every serious battery life test will teach you that the ROG is the winner. I bough a brand new ROG for 350 bucks. Good luck to get a better price for a steamdeck. For the weight my ROG : 608g / Steamdeck : 669g.
I doubt the battery live as its on windows and has more beefed up specs to supporg windows. Ok i had one in my hands i guess ergonomics are completly different when it felt heavier.
350 bucks i get a steamdeck too i guess if it eats my sd cards its an ok price to pay
I can use my phone or tablet as a portable screen for my Xbox
Can even use it as a portable screen for my PC
Why would I want a steam deck vs having a bigger tablet screen and a controller I don’t have to stare at?
Portability, but the steamdeck is as portable as my tablet if it can’t fit it into a pocket.
Have you tried it? It’s quite nice. It plays all my favorite retro games via emulation and most modern games I care about. I can dock it and use a controller and bigger screen. Oh, it also functions as a pretty solid desktop solution if I want.
Solide desktop solution without any printer drivers. Stop to feed steam, there are better solutions for retro gaming.
But still this scraps on that topic is a bulky ps4/5/xbox PORTABLE for you? Steamddck can stream onto bigger displays too or evem remote play things that are to high gpu intensive onto your main pc.
A tablet cant play games ( except mobile games ) on its own.
It has a nice case for transport and the controlls are the best on the market ( even upgradable / easy to repair ) i would love a “just the controller” part of the steamdeck.
And if you need a tablet + controller + the console itself. THIS is NOT portable in any way or form as you just need a literal backpack full of periphials including power cord to power it 24/7.
I don’t need to bring my Xbox around. Simply open the xbox app and my Xbox screen is now on my tablet anywhere I’m at.
My tablet can stream onto bigger displays or even stream my PC.
You don’t need to carry around the console
Ahh its cloud gaming then, like steam link. It works the same.
The Xbox processes the game.
Tablet just streams screen and sends inputs from/to Xbox.
So you don’t really need an extreme tablet/phone/laptop
Im bringing my tablet/phone anywhere I’m going, so having a steamdeck would just be an extra thing to carry and worry about charging.
You can do on-screen controls that aren’t bad for some games. Otherwise, Xbox controller.
The controller in the steamdeck has to kill its battery life some. 2 extra AA batteries, and I could use my Xbox controller for weeks.
I’d rather have 4x the screen size and not have to hold it the entire time while being semi-mobile. I’m not going to walk around and play on a steamdeck, maybe some do and then that’s a plus on the steamdeck.
Steam deck is nice and I can see why people enjoy it. My thing is why more people don’t like tablet/phone/laptop gaming and talk about the steamdeck like it’s a game changer.
My tablet is basically my PC at home. I can access and do everything remotely, including gaming.
Steam link is not cloud gaming. Steam link serves the game from your own PC, not a server in the cloud.
jncos ARE coming back
My niece showed up to Thanksgiving in a pair of them and was lecturing her brother on how he doesn’t understand baggy clothes. I was like I lived through the last time these were popular and I still don’t understand it.
With Emudeck, you also have like at least 5 handhelds in one. I’ll take the variety over portability in this scenario. :p
If you play emulators you can try Ayn Odin is an android device 200 usd or so and the best APU in it. People tells wonders of them. If you want more portability check Anbernic devices. And even then you can check retro corps and phawnx yt channels they go over almost every device available. Right now we have the best portable variety we ever dream to have.
I bought one of those gameboy sized emulator console. I like it, perfect for gba and snes games for me.
I bought myself an Anbernic, and I’m very pleased. GB pocket sized, can run PS1 and less demanding Dreamcast games
Nintendo wants to know your IP address and location
They are appeased i still have a switch only because there wasmt a steamdeck before
Or even just the phone Steam Link app + controller grip (ex. gamesir-x2)

GDP Win 4 enters the room
Sup
I had the first GDP Win and after that would never buy something from them again.
Maybe the fourth iteration is better, but I can’t imagine it has better build quality or performance to the deck.

Interesting to know it’s more powerful.
Sounds like they might have improved some of the build quality. That first GDP Win though has probably sullied my opinion of them indefinitely.
There are cheaper and better options like Evercade or Retroid.
Cheaper maybe, but better? No way.
$99 to $175 and it is pocket size.
But that is just for retro games so of course jts a lot cheaper steamdeck you can play retro and AAA games
laughs in Steamdeck
Huh excuse me?! Have you seen the handle on the GameCube?
The Vita stands as the best when hacked and paired with a sd2vita.
Now, but when it was released, it sucked. I think it’s biggest downfall was they didn’t add a UMD drive to it so it wasn’t backwards compatible with any of the PSP games. If they kept that, it might have sold well.
Not to mention those stupid overpriced memory cards.
I have mine stored somewhere. Got any websites to help with the hacking?
Thanks!
PS Vita is a straight upgrade
PS Vita is a straight down
upgradeFTFY
No no… They have a point.
I love my PSP. Best console ever. But the vita could do all of it and more.
- dual touchscreens
- OLED screen
- no disk drive
- AR camera setup
- cell data and fast wifi
It just also was so powerful that game developers didn’t want to put the effort in but not powerful enough to straight port games to.
It had solid state storage that was proprietary though that was overpriced and impossible to find.So no games to support it. No sales to bring down production costs…
It floundered hard. But as my emulator handheld with mods to let it take SD cards it’s easier to pull out than almost anything else and a catalog of PlayStation games and more… It was an upgrade just Sony failed it.You forgot the best upgrade, dual joysticks!
It was a gimmicky touch pad, the no drive is a negative, without that there was 0 backwards compatibility with the PSPs large library. Which I peg as the main reason it floundered so hard
OLED, 3G and better wifi could have easily been added to a 4th gen PSP iteration
Wait what are you on about? You can play literally ever PSP game ever with adrenaline.
They could play PSP games big issue was buying them again and not being able to download them on the unaffordable memory.
If it had games constantly coming out like the switch did when it first launched it would have been very similar. And if it had storage that was affordable doubly so.
Instead it had the pricing of full consoles for games and few of them from the development costs. Sony failed to bring the games Nintendo does and that killed it far worse than a lack of a spinning disk drive that skipped if you shook it hard enough.
I mean yea that’s kinda my point, Sony had to have known they were not in fact Nintendo and were definitely not going to keep up with the amount of games Nintendo published. Keeping the drive would have been a cheap way to get a running start on the library.
They got greedy and thought people would be happy to re buy PSP games AND fork over money for their insanely priced memory sticks
They actually also made the go and a literal gaming cellphone at this time. I think they were trying to move away from the disks (they were up against the DS) and tried lots of things but put all the money in the hardware instead of the games.
Cause they are like Nintendo when you look at their main consoles. It’s a great piece of hardware. Truly impressive and worth being praised for it but it failed super hard. And it’s not they didn’t keep up they just didn’t use enough of the budget to pay developers to develop the games, and thought people would just be excited about the hardware like they were.
The xperia play was not made by PlayStation and in fact PlayStation did not like the idea that they were using the PlayStation brand. That was all on big boy Sony and Sony Ericsson.
How? UMD was shit, vitas display was a huge upgrade. The analogue sticks were better… I gifted my son the Vita last year and it still holds up. Couldn’t do that with my PSP cause it’s broken.
The UMD, was decent enough, it was optical after all. The problem was they took it away for a gimmicky rear touchpad and in turn locked out all backwards compatibility with PSP games. Which in turn, led to its ultimate downfall because it didn’t have the big backfill of a library when it REALLY needed it to head off the rising smartphone competition (Vita released in 2012)
Display and sticks were better yea, but nothing groundbreaking that couldn’t have been included on a 4th gen PSP iteration.
Also the UI was shit, they replaced the nice XMR/CBR (Whatever it was called) with those stupid bubbles.
A umd drive in a vita would’ve been ridiculous.
Any digital purchases made on the psp store were honoured on the vita and you didn’t face to but them again.
Even so, nowadays it’s just straight up the better option with adrenaline being able to play every PSP game natively, not emulated. The vitas resolution is also a straight 2x scale so the scaling is perfect and allows for an LCD grid shader if you want it to look even more like a PSP.
I tried playing my PSP again a few days ago but that display has deteriorated soooo much. The constant motion blur like qualities is insane. It was already bad when new but it’s almost unplayable now and you’d be hard pressed to find a PSP anywhere near what it looked like on release now I imagine.
I still have mine!
I had a green one. Think it might still be around somewhere too.
Preserve it!
Eh. So much shit that could’ve been preserved when we emptied out the house I grew up in as dad died and grandma moved to a home. No room where to put them and nooot really anyone to preserve them for…
Lots of old electronics as well. I hope I have the gameboy somewhere, but it’s also possible it was in my storage a few years ago when it burned down because a bum fell asleep in the storage room with a lit cigarette.
Sony’s industrial design is second to none. The PSP still feels amazing to hold, despite being an antique.
Absolutely I own 2 actually and still use them with original disks.
PSVita: Am I a joke to you?
Right? With Adrenaline, a Vita can do anything a PSP can do. Plus Vita things.
PSP really was the shit man.
From chains of Olympus to birth by sleep to dungeon siege trone.
Than the vita came and fucked it all up, used it for two games, danganronpa 2 and binding of Isaac.Fr, it truly felt like I was just playing a pocket version of a PS3. I took mine EVERYWHERE, and played it WAY more than my DS lol
And those “portals” you could load on to the memory stick and access via the web browser with games n shit lol
Idiot. All I need is a Nokia with snake
Nah they fucked it up with the sliding PSP Go. If they continued and improved on the original PSP design, it would most likely be competing with the Switch at the moment.
So the PS Vita then?
I think the Vita suffers from a similar problem as the PSP Go which is instead of improving on the PSP, its basically a PSP with features that are practically useless. I said they needed to improve the PSP, not double down on the worst aspects.
Vita was slept on so hard
Serious question because I never had any handhelds back in that era, but what made the Vita suck? I’ve heard there’s some great games on it despite opinions about the console and it’s always been unanimous that the PSP was great, but how did Sony screw it up? Not going out and buying either one right now, but I never really see specific reasons mentioned.
They dropped the UMD drive and replaced it with that gimmicky rear touchpad thing is probably the biggest reason.
They dropped something incredibly functional and would have given the Vita access to the entire library of PSP games at a time when it needed that library the most to compete against the smartphone (Vita was released in 2012)
I think the 3DS/DS were able to remain dominant so long even in the face of strong competition from the rise of the smartphone was because of the deep library of older titles to keep it going forward.
Pretty sure it was the memory cards insane price more than UMD support
They really wanted to recoup the whole of their R&D costs in the first 5 sales with those things.
first 5 sales
And they didn’t even sell that much
Great, thank you! Yeah, dropping the UMD seems asinine when they were struggling to provide a library and demand.
No psp was complete junk. The psp version of games were so bad compared to the original. The disks were expensive, shit selection, one analog stick and a bad one.
Gameboy sp was the best handheld.
And missing a pair of shoulder buttons. PSP is trash and always has been.
You could back a PSP so easily and play so many non PSP games it’s crazy. It was by far the best. Except later I think you could do the same thing with the Vita and it was a flat upgrade all around sooooo
Nah, DS Lite was the sweet spot. Best of both worlds with GBA and DS game selection, pocket sized.
Shame the hinges crap out on it though.
CFW on the new 3DS XL is perfect for me. I don’t need it to fit in a pocket except a jacket pocket, and it has access to all the GB through 3ds games, a surprisingly good battery life, and more importantly, decent quality screens.
Sweet spot for the Nintendo world 100% agreed, but not for portable gaming at large. Nintendo made a lot of concessions on raw power to bring price down
PSP, while more expensive, hit a solid sweet spot between portability and power. It truly felt like you were playing on just a small console rather than a DS which gave the distinct feeling of playing on something “portable”
My only experience with the PSP was the original one with the weird discs; i found it severely lacking in games
Oh man yea there was like 3 iterations between the original and the Vita. In the beginning there was not a whole lot, but towards the end there were a ton of games and a lot of bangers. I think there were like 600+ total games released by the end
God of War, GTA Vice City, Burnout, Ace Combat to name a few excellent classics
nah bro it was Nokia N-Gage
