As they should
Yep. Congress gave the U.S. Secretary of Education the right to do it. But the terrorist party and their illegitimate puppets in SCOTUS decided that, no, a Constitutional law passed by Congress was not valid because… reasons. Can’t let those “libs” ever enact something that is popular, fair, legal, and beneficial…
So yes, everyone should blame SCOTUS and the GOP because they are solely responsible for putting us all in this horrible position.
I’m borderline on this. At some point Trump (or someone like him) will be back in power.
The law is intended to be used during an emergency for: “waiv[ing] or modify[ing] any statutory or regulatory provision”
If you read that literally, it means that Trump could literally make the provision say absolutely anything during an unrelated emergency. Clearly that isn’t the intent.
I’m all for student loan forgiveness… but I mainly blame congress for this. They wrote a crap ambiguous law which SCOTUS needed to determine the bounds of.
Low education take… Learn how the constiution works and spending power.
Also… If your beloved party wanted to do this… Why did they not do so when they controlled both house and presidency?
Asking for a friend.
“Beloved party”
See, that’s one of the many many problems with you fucking idiots. We dont belove our party. Or idolize politicians. Or hang flags or buy wearable merchandise supporting fascists.
We just hate what you represent.
I like how you assume that I’m a proponent of another right-wing political party solely because I pointed out that a different one is a violent, fascist, criminal, terrorist organization.
I only see you trying to hold accountable the “right-wingers”
do you job equitably and nobody would complain…
Yes, because I am a leftist and there are no leftist political parties in the US. Anyone that thinks the DNC is remotely “leftist” has been swayed so far to the right that they can’t imagine there’s an entire world of politics on the other side of the DNCs milquetoast center-right authortiarian-lite platform.
Fine there is no leftist politics in the US…
So here we are circle jerking it online about left and right…
All right wing policies, ideals, and platforms are bad. The right is about consolidated vertical authority (monarchy, fascism, authoritarianism, etc) and the left is about distributed horizontal authority (democracy, socialism, egalitarianism, etc).
But in the US, where all politics is controlled by two ruling right wing parties, only one of those parties is SO FAR TO THE RIGHT that they pose an immediate existential threat to life, liberty, freedom, and societal stability.
I do not support the DNC, but I vehemently oppose the GOP. They are not the same. Don’t assume people support the DNC just because they are trying to prevent the GOP from establishing the Fourth Reich.
All right wing policies, ideals, and platforms are bad
Not if you are wealthy. Or a religious zealot. Or a racist. Or you’re just plain full of hate. Then, that’s the perfect party for you.
Well-said.
Just so you know, if you’re donating to the dnc or dga you’re in an indirect way contributing money to fringe right wing candidates.
Both agencies are in the habit of deliberately elevating those candidates with political advertising during the primary.
The idea is that they will swing republicans to their side in the general election, but i think it’s a dangerous and irresponsible game they’re playing.
You may agree with the practice or disagree (like myself, vehemently.) but everyone should at least know it’s being done.
My stance is a strong one. I consider the practice enabling the fascists they claim to fight
To do something equitably when reality is not equitable is disengineous and immoral
Bullshit, you don’t have any friends.
Yeah. What asshole is going to blame someone else?
I blame the Democrats in Congress for not passing a bill to forgive debt through the Senate.
The Biden executive order was blatantly unconstitutional, conservative SCOTUS super majority or not. Congress needs to get off their ass. Once they pass it in the Senate we can blame the House GOP until it lands on Biden’s desk.
Democrats are not in control of Congress. The House is currently R controlled and they barely have the votes in the Senate due to Sinema and Manchin.
when was the last time they were?
bro leave, stop posting
So you won’t answer the question?
bwahahahaha he thinks it’s worth the mental gymnastics
Lemmy must be getting popular if the right wing debate perverts are all over the place…
Please explain how the Secretary of Education using powers explicitly granted by an act passed by Congress is unconstitutional. Or is that just a word you like to use to mean “something I don’t agree with and have been told to hate”?
The core issue is the Secretary did not have that power. It’s the entire reason Biden’s debt forgiveness fell through.
Do you also blame Santa Claus for not hiding Easter Eggs?
Do you know what holding your politician accountable means?
Republicans get what they ask… what do you get for your vote?
You sound like a republican over here just trying to demoralize this reality. Let’s see how 2024 goes. I’m sure the gop is gonna do reallllly well with their continued bullshit. /s
Found the asshole.
Right? It’s one of those headlines where you go “duh…”.
Now we need to fucking vote.
Joe biden lobbied to remove last leg of BK protection as senator from DE
Obama reformed student loan into clown shit it is today…
College price gouging are mostly “left” leaning “institutions”
Poorly educated people taking on debt made their choices.
I am sure republicans did their fair share fucking us but wtf is this partisan simping when we are getting tagged teamed?
Now let’s up pull up the GOP record on these things
Oh wait, that doesn’t matter because you’re just a bunch of assholes
There is no me in that…
i am the bottom, not left or right…
but sure, since you brought it up, please bring up a few examples of GOP fucking us over on student loans. I am ready to learn.
Thank you for posting this. I was beginning to become concerned that I’d need to visit Reddit for my fill of disingenuous whataboutism, but this gives me hope that we can cultivate a culture of bad-faith posting right here in the fediverse.
It’s almost kinda fun to start a new block list on a new platform.
The thing I miss about Reddit most is RES – I want to be able to tag these users before I block them outright.
For starters the gop brought the suit against the student debt relief. Why the corrupt federal judge decided they had standing to even do it is beyond me. But oh hey look… That federal judge is also a republican, big surprise.
And crickets because the red hat dunce cap crowd doesn’t do well with facts. They’ll spit lies and then when called out will just fade away and do it again somewhere else.
You can fuck right off with that bad faith “both sides” horseshit. You aren’t fooling anyone, people are wising up to this shitty tactic.
Everyone always seems to forget when congress, mainly the GOP, doubled the student loan interest rates in 2012 and slashed most forms of student financial aid, which is a major contributor to the current financial crisis.

Bruh when you have to reach back past 2010 to criticize something Biden did you’ve already lost
That’s pretty bold take. So if we find out Biden murdered a bunch of people in 2009 its okay because it was before 2010. what kind of logic is that. You are basically saying Joe Biden’s entire Senate career is not his responsibility since he was in the Senate from 1972-2009. Lets have some honest discourse here, bring up the full record of people that are alive its the only honest thing to do.
Alright then. It’s unfair to hold someone’s vote from considerably earlier against them, when they have voted/signed to the contrary of that and are actively espousing the opposite of their vote. I think it’s dishonest to act otherwise.
You run into issues otherwise where you don’t have the context of the times that they voted during. Student debt is relatively recent problem, ~90s, that has really accelerated the last decade or two. Voting against relief when it was more affordable is a reasonable position. You’ve also got the crime bill, which was passed in a time where crime was a significant concern for voters, and black communities majority favored the bill.
Maybe the best example, gay rights. Don’t Ask Don’t Tell was once liberal policy. LGBT people could work in the military and they wouldn’t be asked about sexuality. Now, we would consider that incredibly homophobic. California even passed a “Defense of Marriage Act” in I think 2007, and has very much so been pro LGBT rights for quite a while since.
(not so) fun fact! That California law was a constitutional amendment and is still on the books. It’s only unenforceable due to a supreme court ruling. You can see where that’s going.
Fortunately it’s looking like Californian’s will get to vote to repeal that amendment next year.
As much as republicans are in the lead when it comes to fucking over the citizenry, agreed that we should continue to hold both sides - and their records - accountable
