My father changed his politics radically when his health declined and he had to stay home watching tv because of mobility issues. Fuck FOX. Assholes. One of the most harmful entities in the USA. I wish every one of them would drop dead.
I feel extremely lucky that my parents somehow avoided going down that rabbit hole. I’m sorry the hate-media got to your dad, that really sucks.
My dad used to watch it to laugh at it, but I think my mom took a lot of it seriously.
That shit is a cognitive hazard.
Everybody thinks they’re immune to propaganda themselves, that it only influences other dumber people.
I listened to Infowars for fun for years. Surely it’s possible to listen to something and not start believing it. Maybe you’re right in general though.
You also don’t have to be dumb to fall for scams. (Though it certainly makes it easier.)
If they hit the right timing and get lucky with circumstances, they can get just about anyone.
Also most scams have been aimed at boomers. They’ll look different when they’re aimed at millennials.
It happened to my dad after a TBI in like 2015. Went full ancient aliens too.
Hey now. If it weren’t for Ancient Aliens I would probably never sleep. Have a little respect for my insomnia cure!
IDK, have you tried something less likely to cause brain damage, like a 2x4 to the head or something?
So fortunate that my parents got more liberal as they got older.
That really sucks. What’s weird with my parents is that they never watch Fox News ever, only NBC, and still they remain conservative AF. They actively reject any negative information about Republicans. Totally don’t care whatsoever, anything and everything is justified by “both sides, but abortion!!”.
How much facebook are they on?
mom: constantly, but this attitude pre-dates FB. my dad has never had a FB account to my knowledge.
If it’s a local station it might be Sinclair.
Yeah, it definitely is (semi recently acquired), but they also watch the national NBC news every night
Sinclair is pretty insidious. They’re like the old Fox News. Their stories dovetail neatly with unbiased news while being biased. So they can watch NBC national and just get reinforced.
Honestly, keeping the news on all day is just poison anyways. Even a well meaning channel like CNN (although they might be going down the hole) can cause feelings of depression or desperation just because of what we consider to be news worthy. And then people are still stuck looking around for easy answers because CNN was responsible about not biasing the story.
Any news over an hour or two isn’t news it’s fear mongering and entertainment to keep you engaged.
I hate it and am so glad none of my immediate family watches it or even has cable.
You hear something dozen then a hundred times and it becomes true and reality for so many people.
It can happen really fast too though. Anchoring bias is where people tend to believe the first take on an event or news item that sounds reasonable to them.
BE THE CHANGE YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD
Tim Walz is the dad and grandpa that Rush and Rupert stole from us. He’s the family we lost when their personalities changed seemingly overnight.
If the right wing funded rage machine never existed, we would have had millions like him. They’ve broken so many families.
This is exactly it. Fake news should have a regulatory body.
It should be illegal to present entertainment as news and opinion as fact to a global audience. There should be real life jail time (not fines that are only for the poor) for the business owners
When a society in the future figures this out, the world will be a better place.
Who gets to decide what’s fact?
Evidence backing it up
Whatever Newsmax thinks is evidence?
Hopefully not our current supreme court, because that’s where any rehashed version of the fairness doctrine would undoubtably end up. And from the purely originalist stance that this court would obviously take, it is a pretty cut-and-dry first amendment issue.
There’s also the point that truths and facts are two totally different yet related things. Truths are the subjective interpretations of objective facts.
Two people can experience the exact same thing and have a wildly different telling of the exact same events. Neither are necessarily untruthful, but through the omission or inclusion of various facts and context, hell even tone, the truth can be told wildly different ways.
This is quite obvious when watching different news networks cover the exact same event.
the purely originalist stance that this court
I’m not disagreeing, but I don’t want them getting credit they don’t deserve.
They sure weren’t very originalist when they made the president a king
How about a consensus of fact checkers.
Consensus? So when Newsmax fact checking says something isn’t true, you can’t achieve consensus?
Look, the problem is that there’s no way to do this where you don’t run into problems.
If you say it’s a government agency that does the fact checking, then you run the risk that one of the parties messes with that government agency so that the facts always favor its side. If you leave it to private companies, then there’s nothing to stop highly partisan companies from claiming to be fact checkers. If you say the courts can decide, you have a problem when the courts are biased. If you have an elected council of fact checkers chosen by popular vote, you’re relying on voters having enough knowledge and integrity to select unbiased fact checkers.
Does newsmax have a fact checker? There’s only so much you can bend when it comes to matters of fact. If one checker is routinely inaccurate it should be removed from the set.
There’s only so much you can bend when it comes to matters of fact.
I think you’re in for a big surprise.
If one checker is routinely inaccurate it should be removed from the set.
Routinely inaccurate based on what? Fact checking? Newsmax fact checking says it is 100% accurate in all the facts it has checked, but that Snopes and Politifact only hit 60% accuracy, therefore Snopes and Politifact should be removed from the set.
FAIRNESS DOCTRINE!!!
Fox giving “news” while legally not being news has led to crimes, that’s a fact. Maybe prosecutor Kamala could go for a bite but damn it’d be nice to have the news be true again
Another of the many sanity checks Ratass Reagan took from us after the GOP collectively shat itself over Nixon’s press reception.
So much of our nations 4 decades of struggle have come from this moment, and no one involved will ever face justice for degrading our nation so much for so little benefit for so few.
Watergate is why we have fox news and right wing
reality fabricationnews. Roger Ailes had said (paraphrasing) “if we had a friendly media outlet Nixon would have never had to resign.” He then made it his mission to make a right wing media outlet. It’s so infuriating seeing magoos talk about Truth™, Fake News, and BiAsEd MeDiA while consuming literal propaganda aimed specifically at conservatives to keep them voting R no matter what. (This is the part where the magoos head explodes with anger because MsNbC! yOu HaVe ThE sAmE MeDiA BiAS LiBTaRd!)
I swear the #1 issue in America, and most of the world that has to suffer Murdock owned media IS PROPAGANDA RUNNING RAMPANT!
I am so glad that you and others are aware of this. Media is our new religion, I don’t mean that sarcastically or dismissively. The part of our brains that wanted to listen to stories of gods and monsters is what makes us susceptible to carefully crafted media propaganda campaigns.
The “fairness doctrine” didn’t prevent news from being crazy entertainment. Watch the 1975 movie “Network”. Faye Dunaway runs part of a TV network that tries (among other things) to present videos from a terrorist organization as a weekly program. It was ridiculous, but plausible at the time.
Like reinstating the fairness doctrine.
I’d really like this, but I’d also be worried about it becoming a 1984 “ministry of Truth” so to speak if the Republicans gained enough power.
Just make independent fact checking organizations a requirement for every news organization.
What makes a fact checking organization independent? Could Fox News be checked by independent organization Fox Checking? What about by Newsmax Fact Checking?
Snopes is not a great example because of what happened, but like that.
Like what? A site declares itself to be a fact checker, and some people believe it, while others don’t?
A fact checking dedicated organization.
It used to work better when we had the Fairness Doctrine, and it didn’t turn into the Ministry of Truth.
My grandpa was an Army mook from 50s-70s, dude spent literally his entire time working on vehicles to fight the USSR while we had a third party fight in Korea and Vietnam.
Hearing this man suddenly defend Trump and the red caps hurts my heart. They say don’t meet your heroes but goddamn watching one turn into a cult member is worse.
Tim Walz is the Free Dad Hugs guy at Pride Marches
Yoo what? Neat
Ye it’s a whole thing, there’s free mom hugs and free sib hugs now too
Well, I know what I’m doing next pride
What a wonderful description! That’s exactly what he is.
I’m an old man and I feel this way as well. My parents are a lost cause
Full populations of our society are a lost cause. There is a lot of work to do to undo the damage.
We need to hold media responsible for blatantly and intentionally deceiving viewers.
News ought to be a regulated word, if you put it on your show or paper or anything, anywhere, it means you can’t knowingly lie.
Politicians ought to be held to that same requirement, you aren’t allowed to knowingly lie.
You want your full first amendment rights (to lie and deceive) back? Stop being a politician or a “news” person.
They were, before Reagan intentionally fucked it all up in his crusade of feces
Really? What did he do? Is there somewhere i can read about this?
Leeja Miller does a good video on the subject.
You are so right about this. A lot of times knowledge like that is provable. Why the fuck isn’t this a thing?
The people who would implement such a policy would be directly negatively impacted by it.
Guess what? Just like 50% of all bad things about America, Reagan happened.
America used to have regulations on the media. Reagan abolished them in his attempt to make the entire world a dogshit corporate dystopian hellscape.
Oh right I forgot. I remember listening to an entire podcast about this, now that you mention it.
What was the podcast if you remember?
Fraud -the crime of obtaining money or property by deceiving people:
The business model for Fox “News”.
Probably only something will happen when those lying are themselves blasted with so much lies that something needs to happen. It would require something like Russians propaganda machine to insinuate each republican politician had gay sex.
That seems more likely to just be actual news…
If only. We knew lots of folks that died after refusing Covid vaccination. They’d been told batshit crazy stuff by the media they took to be gospel.
I’m afraid they are irredeemable. I tried for a couple of years to get them to see the good but they have been that way for a long time. I just smile, love them because they are super old, and vote against them any chance I get
Tim Walz is the masculine role model that we need.
Tim Walz is what a real patriot looks like. He loves his state, he loves his country, and he does everything he can to make life in both of them better for everyone.
Including telling Kamala not to pick him as VP if he doesn’t help them win.
He even helped make the flag not just better, but the best flag of any state.
Come fight me Marylanders
Exactly, we have the best flag and the best seal anyone else is welcome to be wrong about that.
It’s almost weird how not-creepy he is, in this day and age
He’s so normal seeming.
Hid the bodies good.
Cynical take but okay
I was just talking to a coworker about how Walz being a daughter father is a great look for the campaign trail. No nonsense campaign dad who calls out creeps is going to play well with a lot of people especially women.
And Kamala appeals to all the dudes who had shitty weirdo mothers.
Yeah so, I did not expect to have this reaction to a powerful woman running, and I certainly didn’t experience anything like it with Hillary, and honestly it is probably toxic at base, but, uh…
Ka-mommy.
Shows that America didn’t reject women presidents in 2016 so much as it rejected Hillary. The next step on a carefully laid out career path does not a great president make.
If she had divorced Bill in the 00s, she might have had a chance. Staying with her blatantly cheating former president husband just looked like an old school “divorce is bad optics” decision rather than a more feminist “I don’t need a husband that doesn’t treat me well”. Which didn’t work well when she was trying to run as the latter.
Her entitlement didn’t help, neither did the Democrat establishment working to prevent the progressive option but being willing to back her. Neither did empowering Trump as an opponent she thought she’d get an easy win for when in reality she was the perfect candidate for him to run against.
Even if she made every right choice, the Republicans had been smearing her name for 24 years before she ran for president. Her attempt to simultaneously be elected most entitled person certainly didn’t help. But I think that’s why we nominated Biden in 2020. The watch word was electability because we all saw what decades of FUD did to Hillary.
It’s hard to separate cause and effect there. Was she unliked because of the FUD or did the FUD stick because she was unliked?
It was a close election so it was a perfect storm of a bunch of things lining up all at once. Given how close it was, if the FUD did cause the outcome, avoiding some of those errors might have been enough to win.
Nah, I understand that sometimes you love people who hurt you. Staying with Bill was not a problem.
Her problem was that she couldn’t conceal her contempt for most people (or gave off an aura of self-superiority if you prefer that take).
She particularly gave off an air of scorn towards non-career women, which is pretty dumb when you need them to vote for you.
I voted for her, mind you, but went Bernie in the primary.
I used to know folks who worked in government and I heard several times that Clinton was very unpleasant to all of the secret service staff too. Could be bullshit but when looking at everything else about her, it tracks.
Shows that America didn’t reject women presidents in 2016 so much as it rejected Hillary.
Up until election day Hillary was expected to win. If Trump wins in November, will you say that America rejected women presidents again?
America didn’t reject Hillary, the electoral college did. She actually got more votes than Trump did.
I’m sure that keeps her warm at night, but Trump still got elected.
Yeah, that’s fair, it might be premature still to say that. Also, Trump is more of a known factor this time around.
Stahp
Don’t be gross.
Don’t be gross.
Yeah, everybody knows it’s “Momala”.
I’m just being real about what I’m wrestling with. I’m on a knife’s edge of shame as it is, don’t push me.
If you’re on the knifes edge of shame, then keep your creepy fetishes to yourself. Not in a public forum with a very serious topic.
Consider me chastised. I will endeavor to more appropriately match my tone to the topic in future, P00ptart. Very sorry to have creeped you out.
Kamala has mom energy. Walz has dad energy. What’s creepy about that? Seems downright wholesome, in fact.
Her step kids call her Momala
It’s not that. I have good parents. For me it’s the humanity on display. We’re so used to these stoic leaders putting out a highly polished inhuman image and Kamala and her husband are out here making faces at each other on the campaign trail. Doug actively tries to crack her up when they’re in front of the cameras but not doing speeches or something.
This is absolutely it. She’s so much more human than any of the old croaks that trump hangs out with.
And Donold is so mentally broken that he is unable to genuinely belly laugh at anything. That’s really creepy once you notice it.
America’s Step-Mom, literally.
We need to keep her away from any open front loading washing machines.
Unless…
Literally?
Wow, how does she have time to run for office?
I mean, I think it’s correct usage of literally because both statements are literally true. She’s a step mom and is America’s person, just not technically the step mom of hundreds of millions of people’s…
…or is she?
I can’t find anything in the rule book against it
I’m happy to have an age and gender appropriate candidate for POTUS.
Yeah, it’s refreshing to go back to the tried-and-true boomers after the brief experiment with a silent generation president.
Chud ass take.
You seem like a subject matter expert.
My mom was amazing and died when I was 19, but thank you for your comment.
*Now if you’re referring to CHUDS I actually am an expert…
I am sorry for your loss. I was referring to chuds.
Now I’m still talking about chuds but curious why they are now CHUDS, is that significant? I am not steeped in chud (or CHUDS) culture and appreciate the insight.
Cannibalistic
Humanoid
Underground
Dweller
Small S looks weird!
Well, I personally don’t see the appeal, but as long as you aren’t hurting anyone, I wish you the best of luck.
I will say, though, just as an aside, that it’s odd to me to say “cannibalistic humanoid”, because cannibalism can only be committed against the same species, but the term humanoid seems to describe something up to a range of species.
So it’s as if we are saying, I don’t know what species a CHUDS is, but whatever it is, it is humanoid and that’s also the species it preys on.
But surely we must determine the species of both the predator and the prey to determine that they are both the same species, in which case why the generalized term?
It is quite a vexing problem. This is great weed.
I thought it was “cannibalistic”?
Men too
Can someone explain why exactly?
Last night’s Daily Show had a good segment on him.
He’s basically just a normal “dad”. Was a teacher and a highschool football coach, genuinely enjoys spending time with his family, sometimes is wrong but listens to others and is open to changing his mind.
It’s an incredibly low bar, but dude seems to be a decent human being.
It’s not any deeper than that.
I recently heard the phrase “the bar for men is in hell”. At first I thought they were talking about a drinking establishment for men with the devil. No, it’s saying that the bar for men to get over to be a comparably decent person is so low, it’s in the depths of the earth in hell.
Like, there are so many absolutely terrible men that someone who doesn’t inappropriately touch and does listen most of the time by comparison is like an Olympic gymnast
And yet I catch motherfuckers every day absolutely killing the devil himself in a limbo competition in his own home.
can I ask how you spend your days, that you’re able to find so many on the daily?
not doubting you, at all, just curious as to the frequency.
I work in a corporation that manages self storage facilities.
They’re above, below, in customers, and in the cracks.
Eh…
Kamala is also benefitting from where Biden and Trump have set the bar.
So in this scenario it’d be more accurate to substitute politicians for men in that saying.
Por que no los dos?
Sounds like a sitcom dad.
Because he shows what our parents could be like.
He’s the parent we wish we had.
Waltz gives big dad energy.
He’s not weird.
I bet he is, but the GOOD weird. Not the fascist creep weird.
Not weird, he is corky.
Since he’s a teetotaler and thus doesn’t drink wine, I’m guessing you mean quirky 😉
Which he also is 🙂
I wasn’t sure if it was corky or quirky so I looked it up and I found this article.
Since “quirkiness” was in the title, I figured they were right. I guess maybe not.
I’m 45 years old and I’m pretty sure this is the first time I’ve seen “corky” used as an adjective. The word the article appears to be describing is “quirky” in my world. Must be some kind of regional thing.
Yeah, this seems like a cotton-dried example of bone apple tea.
Did you mean quirky?
I swear I should change my username I say it so often:
FUCK PROPAGANDISTS!!
Rupert Murdock needs to do the world a favor and join Roger Ailes already.
Sean Hamface, Laura Ingrate, and Fucker Swanson Trust Baby Carlson, should have their trip to visit Ailes 6ft under expedited as well.
They’re a goddamn cancer on society. They’ve ruined countless lives.
I live in Georgia, Walz isn’t going to get the hardcore Fox News and MAGA idiots. However, I could see more than a few Kemp voters (basically, moderate conservatives who went Ossoff twice and Warnock thrice) going for Harris/Walz. Further, suburban Atlanta has a lot of people turned right the fuck off by JD Vance. He’s definitely viewed by a lot of OTP folks as yet another crazy person either hand picked and/or enthusiastically endorsed by Trump (like Loeffler, Purdue, and Walker… people felt like these three idiots were forced upon us by Trump). Those people probably won’t vote Harris/Walz, but they just might not show up or, if they do, they might leave the top of the ballot blank. Trump knows his electorate and knows how to play to them, but he doesn’t get Georgia. Kemp is the key to understanding this.
Our governor is Republican Brian Kemp… he’s definitely on the right wing of the party, not a moderate by any stretch of the imagination, but he’s a savvy son of a bitch when it comes to elections in this state. The vibe check on him is: sexist/racist/homophobic uncle who diplomatically holds his tongue at Thanksgiving even if others don’t and things get heated. He believes some wild shit, but keeps it to himself in mixed company (read: armchair racist).
He’s quietly distanced himself from Trump for nearly a decade now. Never pushing the former president away, but never fully embracing him either. Trump and Kemp have a love/hate relationship; Kemp needs the far right MAGA idiots to keep voting for him, but Trump can’t find the center of Georgia politics anymore. In 2020, Biden found that center when 11,780 moderates held their noses and voted for him because Trump was embarrassing them. Having Walz lead the charge on messaging and stump speeches is the best card the Harris team can play in the state if they want to win it… in Georgian statewide politics, Kemp could stump hard and barely beat Harris, but still win. However, he’s got nothing to put up against someone like Walz. Walz, as a person, is literally the kind of voter Kemp courts.
Kemp campaigning against Walz looks like this: Who do you like more? The uncle who’s nice, but you know he’s talking shit about your gay kid on the car ride home OR the coach at the local school who’s nice to everybody and thinks your kid has real talent. Who would you vote for? That’s the reason Georgia is at a statistical tie right now.
I laughed out loud at that.
He went to the store for a pack of Fox News and never came home…
